Exploration Targets Highgraded Using ArcMap, Spotfire, and MapConnect Track: Petroleum Author(s): John Lyle, Mark Ruths Petroleum explorers sift through and analyze vast quantities of data to determine which areas have the most potential for oil discovery. In the past this endeavor has been handicapped by a limited ability to perform dynamic analysis on spatial and nonspatial data. Traditionally, ArcMap has enabled spatial data access and analysis in this process. However, recently the use of ArcMap has been strategically combined with Spotfire's ability to instantaneously visualize and dynamically filter data in multiple nonspatial dimensions. This combination allows rapid discovery and understanding of data. Trends, outliers and 'what-if' scenarios are quickly investigated, leading to faster highgrading of exploration opportunities. MapConnect, an ArcMap extension recently developed by Spotfire and ChevronTexaco, enables this integrated use of ArcMap and Spotfire. Any industry can use MapConnect to effectively enhance and accelerate work processes requiring dynamic integrated analysis of spatial and nonspatial data.
