Extending the CUGIR GIS Data Repository With Interoperable Web Mapping
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Jonathan Corson-Rikert

The Cornell University Geospatial Information Repository (CUGIR, http://cugir.mannlib.cornell.edu), developed and hosted at Mann Library, provides unrestricted access to GIS datasets for New York State with a focus on environmental and agricultural data. CUGIR's ArcIMS software-driven web mapping allows users to preview data prior to download and features interoperability with other web mapping services as modeled by the federal Geospatial One-Stop portal (http://www.geodata.gov). CUGIR offers selected federal, neighboring state, and Canadian map services as reference layers, and users may dynamically specify additional ArcIMS or OpenGIS WMS services for display in a single map using only a standard browser. Because many published map services display only locally-hosted data, CUGIR's flexibility provides important functionality for leveraging distributed services, especially when projects span regional or state boundaries. As standards and tools evolve, we will provide users with greater control over map symbolism and thematic display to further enhance the value and utility of distributed GIS data.
