 BasinPro: Serving Busy Professionals With a Desktop GIS Tool Track: Application Development Author(s): Jeffrey Brown Busy professionals in water quality, public health, emergency management, and other public decision making roles have specific information needs and limited time. An ArcGIS solution from the NC Center for Geographic Information & Analysis (CGIA) titled "BasinPro" gets GIS on the table. CGIA organized the best available statewide GIS data into groups of themes in a river basin framework with attention to symbolization, theme properties, and metadata. To the ArcMap interface, CGIA added ArcObjects tools that enable the user to estimate population in a user defined area, join selected Census 2000 fields to a boundary theme, and summarize point features into watersheds or other polygon themes. CGIA coached users through practice sessions to apply the tool to their specific information needs. This paper describes the requirements for and the design of the ArcObjects tools in the context of the NC dataset and practical applications in state and local government.
