2004 UC Proceedings Abstract
Developing a Vector Property Map for the District of Columbia Track: Cadastral and Land Records Author(s): Bill Bond, Jeffrey Poplin The Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) and Dewberry have devoted an extensive multiyear effort in evaluation and computerization of property records in the District. The first study revealed that lot and squares information contained within tax maps would not produce a sufficiently accurate product. The tax maps were developed and maintained for tax purposes only. The Surveyor's records for lot and squares were generated from field surveys and coordinate geometry arcs contained in records of the Office of the Surveyor. The final project report detailed many of the findings, issues, and recommendations that are now used as a basis for building the vector property map for the District. The objective of using coordinate geometry (COGO)-digitizing the boundaries of each lot and square to produce accurate data representing locations of property lines to determine or dictate location and size for the purposes of zoning, taxation, planning, and deed recordation.
