How GIS Technologies Improve Watershed Master Planning
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Derek St. John

Tropical Storm Allison landed in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, and brought with it a record setting rainfall event. Following this catastrophic event, the Tropical Storm Allison Recovery Project, or TSARP was initiated. As part of the TSARP effort, a highly detailed LIDAR data set was obtained for all of Harris County that was used to develop HEC-RAS Steady Flow simulations for all 22 watersheds within the county. This information, coupled with several other data sources, was used in conjunction with ArcGIS, and the Arc Hydro and HEC-GeoRAS tool sets, to produce the Addicks Reservoir Watershed (Addicks) Master Plan for the Harris County Flood Control District.
