Trans-Pacific Enterprise GIS Implementation for the Pacific Air Forces
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Randal Brownell, Lance Filler

This paper will discuss the transition to an enterprise GIS at Head Quarters Pacific Air forces (HQ PACAF). The transition entails migrating hundreds of gigabytes of vector and raster data from Personal Geodatabases and TIFF and SID file formats to ArcSDE and replacing ArcReader with ArcIMS. Topics covered will be Certification & Accreditation (AF system approval), hardware specifications, software configuration, logistics and coordination, hands on implementation at each base, data migration and training. PACAF's area of responsibility extends from Alaska through Hawaii to the U.S. Territory of Guam and Diego Garcia. It encompasses everything from the west coast of the Americas to the east coast of Africa. In total, PACAF's area of responsibility crosses 16 time zones, is home to roughly 60 percent of the world's population. The people of this region speak more than 1,000 languages and dialects and are spread throughout 43 countries and 30 territories.
