Adding Editorial Value by Positioning Television Viewers
Track: Location Services
Author(s): Gunnar Garfors

Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) was the first broadcaster in the world to use the location of its viewers to enhance interactive services in May 2003. In the discussion and debate program Redaksjon EN, the viewers who took part in the television poll via SMS and IVR were positioned on a map of Norway on screen, thus letting the program leader and the audiences know how opinions differ geographically in Norway. Norway is a diverse country with small fishing villages, medium-sized towns, a lot of farmland, and a few cities. The paper will describe the new and exciting editorial possibilities in separating opinions based on geography, that is, differentiate opinions in a city from those in a rural area. Redaksjon EN is very appreciative of this and other NRK program may take up the technology. Our partner on location services, Geodata AS, has proposed that we present this at your conference.
