The Influence of Map Design on Fire Management Decision-Making
Track: EMS, Fire and Disaster Management
Author(s): R.J. Kern

This presentation is designed to understand how to improve maps used in wildland fire management at the federal level and will focus on two key questions: What geo-spatial data is used now and what do users see as the strength and weaknesses of existing geo-spatial data used in fire management mapping applications? In what ways can weaknesses of existing geo-spatial data be remedied through better visualization techniques and improved data quality and coverage? Ultimately, survey results reveal the changing geospatial data uses and needs within the U.S. federal land management agencies and emergency-response GIS mapping industries.
