LandScan Global Population Database Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Edward Bright, Phillip Coleman Accurate depictions of global population distribution are critical for a wide variety of research needs including resource management, policy analysis, and emergency preparedness and response. Catastrophic events such as natural disasters, terrorist incidents, and other threats place vast populations at risk. A global population distribution database is essential for estimating populations at risk. The LandScan Population model developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory provides a global gridded population distribution estimate at a 30-by-30 arc-second (< 1 km.) resolution. LandScan is the highest resolution global population database produced and is updated annually. LandScan utilizes GIS and remote sensing data and technologies through a dasymetric modeling approach to distribute a census population count within a geographic area.
