ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst Application in Assessment of MTBE Contamination
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Jie He

Methyl-Tert-Butyl-Ether (MTBE) is an oxygenated fuel addictive to reformulated gasoline, it is considered as the leading groundwater contaminant that causes a threat to public health and living environment. This paper first discusses background of MTBE contamination, it then utilizes the ArcGIS Geostatictical Analyst to explore sample data, analyze and predict MTBE concentrations in the groundwater of City of Temecula, California. MTBE concentration data were collected from various sources including the California Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Geotracker Web site. Finally, spatial distribution and autocorrelation of MTBE concentration were estimated. The MTBE concentration spatial surface was generated, and the probability maps of the MTBE concentration that exceeds a critical threshold were created and cross-validated. The findings are that ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst is well developed and would greatly assist the MTBE remediation if the sample data is large enough.
