Mobile GIS: Building a Reservoir With ArcPad Software
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Author(s): Frank Salmon

When it is completed, the Tampa Bay Regional Reservoir will be the largest aboveground water storage facility in the state of Florida. The Tampa Bay Water Authority selected HDR to design the reservoir and manage its construction. Numerous geotechnical analyses of soil density and other factors are required each day over the entire construction site to ensure the safety of the giant embankment under construction. It was determined that the traditional paper based data collection methods would take too long to capture the 10,000+ soil test locations at the reservoir. To solve the problem, a laptop-based ArcPad application was developed that uses GPS to locate each test site, record its field analysis measurements, and perform needed calculations on the spot. Initially the soil technicians were apprehensive on using the new technology; today they feel the ArcPad application is indispensable.
