Building Capacity in the U.S. Flag Pacific Islands
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Darcee Killpack

The NOAA Pacific Services Center (PSC) supports the integration of spatial technologies in the U.S. flag Pacific Islands of Hawai`i, American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands by enhancing capacity and improving coordination among the natural resource and coastal management communities. PSC has been involved with many efforts to build local capacity in the areas of GIS, remote sensing, metadata, and GPS through an on-island technical assistantship, Esri software and training workshops, and the delivery of high-resolution satellite imagery in the islands. These efforts have supported the development of land permitting systems, hazard mitigation plans, and watershed analyses. PSC also is bringing together representatives from various organizations involved in hazard mitigation-related activities in the Pacific. Under this partnership, a data management working group has been formed to support dialogue between providers and users of spatial data related to hazard mitigation.
