2004 UC Proceedings Abstract
Coffee of the Thousand Hills: DSS for Rwanda's Coffee Sector Track: Agriculture Author(s): Michele Schilling, Tom McConnell Rwanda intends to increase coffee quality to compete in the specialty coffee market segment. Coffee operators need to build Washing Stations (WS) to produce high quality coffee. The National University is developing a GIS-based decision support system for investments in the coffee sector. The system will be capable of managing all aspects of coffee production, processing, transportation, and treatment of wastewater. It will also allow Rwanda to develop a marketing tool identifying Rwanda's unique coffee zones. A pilot study washing station was built in 2001 resulting in enhanced quality coffee production. An additional washing station was needed. ArcGIS vector-based spatial analysis was used to identify potential sites. A siting model was then developed using Spatial Analyst to select the best location within each coffee service area. This model incorporates coffee growing capacity, roads, access to clean water, slope, and elevation. Validation of the model was done in the field.
