Development of Enterprise GIS for the Kentucky Army National Guard
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Jane Clark, Marianne Cardwell, Jeff Hankley, Mark Collins

In 2002, the Kentucky Army National Guard (KYARNG) determined a comprehensive GIS was needed that could be shared with all stakeholders and provide a user-friendly interface for non-technical personnel. The development of this system included two parts: the capture of data for all 63 facilities throughout the state, and the creation of a custom application. This presentation covers the development of this enterprise GIS, the decisions that were made along the way, and lessons learned, from both the KYARNG and the contractor's perspective. The developed system was built using ArcSDE and ArcIMS; the data is SDSFIE compliant and the metadata is FGDC compliant. The presentation will go over the thought process that went into using a combination of ArcIMS and ArcSDE, the data collection using GPS and available data sets, and the application development processes.
