The Use of GIS to Visualize Fish Distribution
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Kathrine Michalsen, Ian McQuinn

In this study we have used ArcMap and ArcScene to produce a three-dimension alvisualization of the acoustic fish densities and bottom topography. We have also flown through the data, taken pictures and put these together into a small video. The process revealed lack of data, or rather, lack of resolution in existing data, and, most interesting, new questions arose and stimulated new ideas for further investigation. We now see the potential for using GIS to investigate changes in fish distribution during the day and at night, to explore sex differences in area preference at the spawning ground, to reveal the relation between temperature and the occurrence of spawning and to examine potential patterns in the distribution between different species.
