Public Works' GIS Support Before, During, and After Hurricane Isabel Track: EMS, Fire and Disaster Management Author(s): Kirstin Platt The Tidewater area of Virginia is accustomed to hurricanes. The most recent hurricane to make landfall was Isabel on September 18, 2003. Due to advanced planning, the City of Newport News, Department of Public Works GIS group was able to quickly step up to the task of supporting the divisions within Public Works as well as other City departments. The Department was able to use its GIS to plan for the impact of the storm, react real-time to the extensive damage, aid in the planning for debris removal, perform analysis and generate data and plots for in-house, city, state, and federal use. The GIS group also strove to obtain hurricane-related data that had not been captured in the past to perform long-term analyses. Through these measures, the GIS helped the Public Works divisions get the City and its citizens back to normal faster.
