Arid Environments: The Quest for New Military Training Areas
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): John Brockhaus, Braden Hurley, Simon Welte, Wendell King, Daniel Gillewitch

The United States Army is trained, equipped, and expected to fight and win on any terrain, in any weather condition. In today's era, the dominant environment is the desert. To prepare soldiers to successfully fight under desert conditions, the Army must conduct realistic training over the array of challenging natural settings that the desert provides. This study is focused on better understanding the challenges soldiers face in deserts/arid operational environments and identifying suitable training areas that are characteristic of these conditions. In this study, desert regions were defined by temperature, precipitation, and landscape characteristics. Databases defining the spatial distribution of these parameters were developed and analyzed within the framework of a GIS to delineate regions that provide the necessary desert conditions in which to train.
