Integrating Custom Data Sources Into the ArcGIS Framework
Track: Metadata and Data Publishing
Author(s): Jochen Manegold

In Switzerland, the common language for modelling, describing, and transferring of geographical data models is called INTERLIS. Especially for the transfer of geographical information between different systems, INTERLIS is the most important standard for this country. This paper presents INTERLIS as an example of how to implement custom data format into ArcGIS Desktop. Based on ArcObjects, new classes, including custom GxObjects and a custom PlugInWorkspaceFactoryHelper, were implemented. They extend ArcCatalog and ArcMap with the capability to browse, manage, and view the contents of INTERLIS files as single tables or feature classes, including export of these tables into shapefiles or geodatabase tables.
