2004 UC Proceedings Abstract
Washington DNR Natural Heritage Program Southwest Washington Prairie Land Areas Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Janice Miller, Florence Caplow, Chris Chappell Remnant grasslands of southwestern Washington (Clark, Lewis, and Cowlitz Counties) support, or did support, four federally listed and one federal species of concern: Nelson's Checker-Mallow (Sidalcea nelsoniana); Bradshaw's Lomatium (Lomatium bradshawii), Kincaid's Sulfur Lupine (Lupinus Sulphureus var.kincaidii); Pale Larkspur (Delphinium leucophaeum), and Golden Paintbrush (Castilleja levisecta). GIS analysis for possible re-introduction sites was done using available GIS data layers: Soils data derived from the Private Forest Land Grading system (PFLG), USGS GNIS names containing "prairie" or "plain", Oak/Grasslands layer developed by Chris Chappell of WNHP, Elevation (below 1500 feet), Georeferenced General Land Office (GLO) TIFF files of historical survey plats, and digitized delineated prairie areas from the plat maps. The identified prairie areas will be the basis for reconnaissance fieldwork scheduled for spring of 2004.
