Integrating an Oblique Airphoto Library From Pictometry Directly Into ArcMap
Track: New Technology and System Integration
Author(s): Charlie Richman

Traditional GIS users often rely heavily on orthophotos, but how often do you really want to look at the roofs in an urban area? Oblique airphotos show the buildings underneath those roofs and can be more useful for many purposes. The District of Columbia licensed a comprehensive library of oblique airphotos from Pictometry International, together with their viewer. While it has many useful features, their tool didn't answer our GIS users' most common request: "I've mapped my site in ArcMap; how can I see what it looks like viewed from the front?" We don't need to compare and measure the available images in detail--we need an easy way to add good oblique views to ArcMap. This paper describes how we extended ArcMap to select the best images from the Pictometry library, add them to our layouts, and zoom to the relevant portions of those photos.
