Using Address-Based Geospatial Source Data at the Census Bureau
Track: Census and Geodemographics
Author(s): Gregory Stone

Maintaining the Master Address File (MAF), a comprehensive database of addresses and locations of all known living quarters in the United States and Puerto Rico, presents a major challenge for the U.S. Census Bureau. Numerous data sources exist that could potentially add value to the MAF. This presentation describes how the Geography Division of the Census Bureau will examine, evaluate, and utilize addresses and geographic coordinates provided in geospatial files obtained from local governments. The address records and coordinates from these files will be used to improve the geocoding accuracy of the MAF and assist enumerators in the filed. As part of the process, the Census Bureau uses ArcInfo 8.x to view, analyze, and process these geospatial files and ArcPad to aid in the field evaluation of files.
