GIS Mapping and ArcIMS Integration, San Diego Nearshore Program
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): Mark Carpenter

The California State Coastal Conservancy and SANDAG initiated the Inventory and Evaluation of Habitats and Other Environmental Resources in the San Diego Region's Nearshore Coastal Zone (Nearshore Program) in 2000 as a valuable tool for marine resource conservation and management. The Nearshore Program is a cooperative effort involving National Marine Fisheries Service, California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the California Coastal Commission, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, among others. Development of a habitat classification and associated GIS mapping standards were crucial to the integration of pre-existing and collected GIS data into a comprehensive database and ArcIMS application. This large-scale nearshore mapping effort is ground-breaking in Southern California, potentially the nation, making the lessons learned valuable to GIS consultants, resource managers, and regulatory agencies. Topics will cover issues associated with the habitat classification system, spatial standards, data collection and integration methods, and ArcIMS implementation.
