Taking the Cambridge, Massachusetts Geodatabase to the Next Level
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Jeff Amero, James Carolan

The City of Cambridge, Massachusetts is in its second year of development of the City's water and wastewater GIS infrastructure using an enterprise geodatabase (SDE/SQL Server) and ArcGIS. This involved migrating multiple older Workstation based ArcFM implementations into the new geodatabase environment. The first year was primarily spent building the models and migrating the data. In this second year we are creating business processes for data maintenance while also developing methods of delivering the data to the staff that need it most. The data maintenance processes include the use of a versioned SDE geodatabase that allows data maintenance staff to edit the data while insulating the master data sets until management staff have reviewed and passed off on the data in the versions. In addition, the City is using the new disconnected editing function to enable field staff to provide data more efficiently back to the editors.
