Point and Click GIS: ArcObjects Customization of Routine Business Processes Track: Application Development Author(s): Xuechao Chi ArcMap is commonly recognized as Esri's 2D ArcGIS platform, while ArcScene is Esri's 3D GIS viewer. Normally, once an ArcScene project is created, it can then be viewed within ArcMap. However, this ArcScene project cannot be manipulated within ArcMap. This paper presents a method to switch between 2D and 3D viewers and perform complex queries and data processing within ArcMap, completely bypassing ArcScene. Layer files with elevation information are created in ArcScene, then loaded into ArcMap using ArcObjects Scene Viewer. In ArcMap, the individual layer can be controlled and analyzed simultaneously with the 2D view. An integrated, dynamic link between the 2D and 3D viewer provides more flexible viewing and analysis capabilities. The 2D and 3D viewer customization models a routine business process for casual municipal desktop users. It combines many commonly used GIS functions into a few, easy-to-use forms. A demonstration of this GIS application will be provided. Xuechao Chi Michael Baker Jr., Inc.
