High Resolution Imagery for Mapping Riparian Vegetation Structure
Track: Remote Sensing Imagery
Author(s): Kevin Birch

To fully utilize their ArcGIS software-based enterprise database, there is a need within the state of Oregon to obtain spatial data concerning land coverland use and biophysical properties of the riparian landscape. Currently, this data is obtained through manual photo interpretation or expensive field surveys. Spatial data from satellites offers a more regular flow of data, and automated classification methodologies are faster and more controlled than traditional photo interpretation techniques. However, the most advanced computer-based mapping techniques cannot fully embody the knowledge and experience of the photo interpreter. The solution is to employ procedures and software tools that combine the speed and consistency of computer-based analysis with the knowledge of the photo interpreter. In this project, we evaluate and implement automated feature extraction procedures to test different resolution image sources' abilities to map the structural components of riparian vegetation and to incorporate the results into an enterprise GIS.
