Implementing Environmental Management and Analysis Tools in a Transportation GIS
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Simone Babb

Departments of Transportation (DOTs) across the Country have expressed concern and a need for effective environmental management and analysis tools and processes that can be deployed and implemented in an Enterprise GIS environment. The Florida Department of Transportation is currently expanding their current Enterprise System known as TAIMS (Transportation Automated Information Management System) to address environmental concerns. A GIS approach to environmental analyses integrating land use, transportation, and environmental resource planning and management through early resource agency involvement to fulfill the Congressionally mandated Environmental Streamlining initiatives set out in Section 1309 of the Transportation Efficiency Act of the 21st Century (TEA21) is the focus of the development effort. The resulting toolset, built in the ArcGIS and ArcIMS environments, allows transportation planners to view and evaluate potential environmental impacts of transportation improvement projects in alternative potential corridors.
