The Use of GIS on Water Quality Mapping
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Gerard Moss

Mapping the water quality of Brazil's main rivers, lakes, and reservoirs covering more than 8 million sq. km. is the objective of the "Brasil das Aguas" Project. For that, 1,000 samples collected with an amphibian aircraft ("flying lab") named Talha-Mar are duly indexed with the geographic coordinates of each collection point. Georeferenced photographs taken at each location enable the scientists to understand the characteristics of the water in the context of the surrounding terrain of forest, pasture, plantation or urban development. Results are subsequently posted on a Web site, in GIS Web format, under 'Mapa das Águas'.
