Designing and Implementing a GIS for Epidemiology and Public Health Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Ramon Martinez-Piedra, Carlos Castillo-Salgado, Enrique Loyola-Elizondo, Manuel Vidaurre-Arena, Patricia Najera-Aguilar This paper provides a description of SIGEpi, a GIS designed for applications in Epidemiology and Public Health. The emphasis is on its functionality, particularly on the statistical and epidemiological methods, the techniques for estimation of rates and proportions, identification of critical areas and population groups, spatial exploratory data analysis for assessing and visualizing the geographical distribution of diseases and health events, and some methods for public health practice. SIGEpi integrates analytical procedures specifically for epidemiological data analysis in a GIS environment, including GIS generic functions, exploratory data analysis and quantitative epidemiological methods, clustering of health events and functions for epidemiological and public health practice. Conceptual and practical issues related to the implementation of this GIS are discussed and illustrated with examples. Some ideas are formulated on the requirements and future direction pertaining to GIS for epidemiology and public health.
