Spatial Analysis of Highway Commuter Patterns
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Matthew Sheppard

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) at the U.S. Department of Transportation has been working to develop a set of GIS tools using ArcGIS to analyze highway commuter data for a range of transportation studies. Commuter data is provided by the U.S. Census Bureau through the Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) program, a partnership between the Census Bureau and state governments. LEHD data is unique in its journey-to-work content and comprehensiveness and presents BTS with the opportunity to develop travel demand models and forecasts, along with other studies of transportation trends. This paper details the ArcGIS applications and spatial analytical methods developed for BTS' studies and summarizes key results of the initial phase of the project.
