Demonstrating GIS Capabilities and Applications to Kentucky's Agricultural Stakeholders Track: Agriculture Author(s): Benjamin Koostra, Timothy Stombaugh, Dennis Hancock Multi-disciplinary researchers and extension professionals at the University of Kentucky are exploring a variety of methods and tools to demonstrate the practical capabilities and potential applications for using GIS in agriculture and activities that impact agriculture. GIS is a key component in implementing precision agriculture practices and technology. However, a significant lack of information on the applicability to Kentucky producers limits the adoption of cost-effective practices and technology. GIS can also be used as an effective tool by policy makers determining the impact of agriculture from increased urbanization of rural areas in Kentucky. The extension outreach tools and methods used to demonstrate GIS include hands-on training sessions, on-line tutorials and publications, decision-making and planning tools, and peer user networks.
