Perception vs. Reality: Mapping Crime With CrimeMAPS in San Francisco
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Author(s): Jeff Johnson

With CrimeMAPS, San Francisco's Police Department (SFPD) and Department of Telecommunications and Information Services (DTIS) now map all incidents of crime, accidents, and calls for service in the City on a nightly basis, allowing for timely analysis, accurate reporting and efficient allocation of limited SFPD resources. The ArcGIS software-based CrimeMAPS Desktop and ArcIMS software-driven CrimeMAPS Web applications enable the SFPD to analyze historical and current data and thereby determine crime trends and hot spots. The wealth of data--served up via ArcSDE and DB2 and presented via the two Omega Group-developed applications--has both confirmed as well as altered the way the SFPD's command staff plans for and responds to the incidence of crime in San Francisco. The presentation explores SFPD's current and historical perception of where high incidence of crime occurs and discusses how well that perception correlates with the actual areas of high crime found in CrimeMAPS.
