2004 UC Proceedings Abstract
Building a Successful Enterprise GIS in San Francisco Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Erich Seamon The City and County of San Francisco has, over the course of three years, implemented a robust enterprise GIS program (www.sfgov.org/gis) that supports all aspects of geographic information for San Francisco city departments. With an integrated architecture based on ArcGIS (including ArcSDE and ArcIMS), enterprise GIS servers house common datasets that are accessible via a web browser, or by using an ArcGIS product over SF's intranet. San Francisco utilizes a decentralized technology model, where city departments store and house confidential spatial data on local servers--with interconnections to central ArcSDE servers for centralized distribution and standardized access. This presentation will address policy and management issues related to San Francisco's enterprise GIS efforts, as well as providing live examples of functional GIS applications--including San Francisco's economic development mapping tool, SFProspector (www.sfprospector.org) and our new crime analysis and mapping system, CrimeMAPS (www.sfgov.org/crimemaps).
