2004 UC Proceedings Abstract
Perfect Partners: Geospatial Technology, Geospatial Users, 4-H Youth! Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Tom Tate Learn the short- and long-term goals of 4-H (www.4-H.org) GIS-GPS programs and ways in which local GIS users can become 4-H club and youth mentors and community research collaborators. For 100 years, 4-H youth and adults have learned, grown, and worked together as catalysts for positive change in their communities. Led by the USDA-CSREES and land-grant universities, 4-H focuses on teaching youth leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Youth engage in real community projects to acquire higher order thinking and problem solving skills, teamwork capacities, and personal accountability. In recent years, 4-H has been working to build technology skills among 4-H youth and their communities. Geospatial technology, especially GIS and GPS, is a growing part of those efforts. In addition to 4-H geospatial goals and user opportunities, the session will briefly discuss examples of local youth community mapping projects and a new national effort by the 4-H GIS-GPS Integration Team: the 4-H Youth Favorite Places interactive atlas.
