Building an Asset Inventory Geodatabase Using ArcPad for Data Collection
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Author(s): Sandra Downie

Federal, State and Local governments are developing asset management information systems to create auditable asset inventories. Construction cost data integrated into the data model can be used to baseline the value of the organizations property holdings. Interagency collaboration would establish common standards for inventory reporting, condition surveys and deferred maintenance estimating. Standardized responses simplify field work, maintain database integrity and facilitate sharing of benchmark cost data between facility management organizations. Utilizing the geodatabase features in ArcGIS 8.3 and the new data synchronization tools in ArcPad 6.0.2, domains become attribute pull down menues in a wizard created ArPad template when the data is checked out for editing. A compact mobile PC/GPS equipment package, which can be operated by staff who know the asset data but with little knowledge of geography much less GIS and computers, is an efficient, economical, effective, and expedient application of e-technology.
