DC Real-Time Snowplow Tracking System
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Jamey Harvey, Andy Shaw

During the wintertime, the snowplow operation has always been an imperative

and challenging task for the DOTs and DPWs. Because the amount of snow is

not always predictable and the heavier the snowstorm the more anxious the

citizens desire the streets to be treated, to improve its snowplow operation efficiency, the District of Columbia implemented a pilot snowplow tracking system in the winter of 2003. The system integrates GIS technology with GPS and wireless communication to provide real-time maps and reports benefiting the managing, balancing, and estimating of the plow and salting operations.
