Creating a Distributed National Database for Carbon Sequestration
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Author(s): Ken Nelson, Prem Radhakrishnan, Jeremy Bartley, Chris Korose

Geological surveys and other research institutions are major repositories of geological, geophysical, natural resource, and environmental data. Five state geological surveys have been funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to create a distributed online GIS portal database for geologic sequestration of green house gases over seven regions covering 33 states. This distributed database will allow users to evaluate the geographic distribution, physical characteristics, and economic parameters of potential CO2 sources and geologic sequestration sites. Each region will publish its spatial and tabular data with ArcIMS. The portal will serve as a central metadata repository that contains server information and metadata. A series of ArcXML requests are generated based on client input to the portal and sent to the regional servers. The portal captures, georeferences, and merges images from each server creating a final image that is sent back to the client.
