Connecting Our World: GIS Web Services Track: New Technology and System Integration Author(s): Winnie Tang, Jan Selwood, Paul Hoi Yuen Tsui GIS Web services combine two powerful enabling technologies - GIS bringing together, integrating, analyzing, and the Web providing global connectivity. The result is exciting. Data and analytical tools are shared in new ways, found more easily, integrated more freely by a user community that is growing exponentially. They are creating what Jack Dangermond has sometimes called "the nervous system of this spaceship Earth", a fundamental information or knowledge network that supports the husbandry of our planet. Illustrated by a series of international case studies, this paper explores the technology, requirements, and opportunities that are involved in this rapidly evolving field.
