2004 UC Proceedings Abstract
Using Geospatial Technology for Public Health Preparedness Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): William Henriques, Todd Raziano The Department of Health and Human Services Secretary's Command Center (HHS/SCC) is a 24/7 operations center that tracks events of public health significance. The HHS/SCC has been using geospatial technologies for public health preparedness and response activities, both natural and man-made. West Nile virus, SARS, and isolated disease outbreak information is more quickly understood by decision makers when the information is depicted visually. This approach results in a greater understanding of disease transmission and provides an opportunity to examine other factors that may contribute to disease spread. Geospatial technology has also been used in preparedness exercises to model the impact of harmful agents and in the creation of web-based systems that monitor our nation's public health assets. Through partnerships with national and international health organizations we can now share information in real-time using GIS technologies.
