2004 UC Proceedings Abstract
An ArcIMS Application for Tracking and Predicting Insect Infestation Track: Education Author(s): Sarah Jackel Case Study: Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Ceratitis Capitata). Common use of pesticides in agriculture, blanketing crops with insecticides when damage is noticeable, has been proven to be dangerous, costly, and marginally effective. With careful monitoring and analysis of the location of pests, the farmers will be able to reduce the quantity of chemicals sprayed through more efficient and effective application (the right place at the right time). The benefits of this type of pesticide application include not only improving crop yield and cost reduction but also the improvement in the overall health of the environment and people involved. This ArcIMS application provides farm owners the tools to enter insect count data, view densities of the Medfly, predict their location, view density time series, and receive a recommendation from decision support software. With knowledge gained from information and technology, proper pest management through the early detection of the Medfly can take place. Sarah Jackel University of Redlands MS GIS Program P.O.
