Measuring Quality of Life: Moving Beyond Part One Crime Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Author(s): Rebecca Colwell In law enforcement, accurate portrayals of the quality of life in residential communities are important for police resource allocation as well as strategic and tactical policing practices. Standard conventions used by police agencies for determining quality of life include producing tables, graphs, and maps depicting Part I offenses. Through geographic analysis of incident data from the Lincoln, Nebraska, Police Department, this presentation addresses alternative methods for determining the quality of life in communities. A quality of life index will be presented that identifies crimes, events, and locations that may provide a clearer indication of neighborhood health. The benefits of using these indicators are, among other things, better internal communication and more precise distribution of police resources.
