Ground Truthing LIDAR Data in Tallahassee, Florida Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management Author(s): Lee Hartsfield, Brian Raber As part of the 75- square-mile LIDAR mapping project, Tallahassee/Leon County (TLC) required additional GPS and conventional vertical points to be surveyed to validate the accuracy of the LIDAR surface model. The goal was to quantify the results of the LIDAR acquisition strategy and digital vegetation removal (a.k.a. filtering) in obscured regions of the county. The ground truth survey was conducted in unique areas such a: bare earth and low grass; high grass; fully covered coniferous trees; ravine areas, fully covered deciduous trees; sandy areas; and urban land use/land cover sub-regions. The goals of this presentation are to discuss the importance of ground truthing, techniques used, and compare LIDAR and traditional photogrammetric data in various land use/land cover areas of the county.
