Implementation of a Water Geodatabase for the City of Cape Town
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Pieta Le Roux

Over the last two years, the City of Cape Town has undergone a massive restructuring from seven local authorities to one large metropolitan city. Core to the success of the integration of the various local authorities was to integrate the finance and billing systems. A part of this plan was to ensure that the whole city's business processes were standard, optimized and that all information systems were integrated, including GIS. This process put pressure on the various GISs to become robust and reliable and fully integrated into the Cities Information Technology architecture. To achieve these objectives the City decided to implement the Esri Geodatabase technology. This describes the process followed and experiences obtained to determine the Water Services business requirements with regard to spatial information, designing a system that adheres to the City's IT strategy and architecture.
