Developing a Data Management System for the Norwegian Armed Forces
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Birgitte Moen

The demand for digital geographical information (DGI) within the Norwegian Armed Forces has been constantly increasing. The Norwegian Armed Forces' new vision "A modern Defence for national security and international engagement," has also contributed to the growing need for DGI. To be able to support the customer in Norway and abroad without hiring more staff, Norwegian Military Geographic Service (FMGT) had to change strategic direction. Maximum use of technology and automation has been the main focus when developing a new system for management and distribution of DGI. The system consists of automated/semi-automated routines to import DGI from various formats, products and sources. It also includes routines for management, export to various formats, ordering, and distribution. The DGI delivered from the system should include layout and be ready-to-use. The development is mainly based on ArcObjects. The software used is ArcGIS, ArcSDE and ArcIMS from Esri, ERDAS IMAGINE from Leica Geosystems, MARIA from Teleplan, and Oracle database solutions.
