Swedish Geocell in Kosovo: Deployable Geographic Field Support
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Anton Bacic

Over the last years there has been a drastic paradigm shift in Swedish foreign security policy, transforming the Swedish Armed Forces from a static invasion defense force toward a more flexible, task-oriented defense force with increasing international involvement and cooperation. Sweden is contributing to the multi-national brigade in Kosovo, and for the first time Sweden has sent a deployable Geocell for service abroad, over two terms of six months each. The Geocell has been staffed by five persons, all with a civilian background in surveying or GIS. Its main task has been supporting the 5,000 soldiers of the multi-national brigade in Kosovo with map production and terrain analysis. Experiences and ideas on how deployable Geocells may be used in international peace-keeping missions will be shared.
