Using GIS During Complex Emergencies Track: EMS, Fire and Disaster Management Author(s): Michal Smolka Responding to large-scale complex humanitarian emergency often involves a wide range of diverse set of both international and local actors focusing on a variety of sectors in order to provide emergency relief to those needy and vulnerable. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) main focus is on the coordination of humanitarian emergency response where GIS plays an integral role in providing the context and the coordination tools in supporting the emergency. How GIS is utilized, the kinds of products developed and the challenges confronted during a humanitarian crisis are issues that will be addressed.
