Locating Population and Poverty: A Call for Participation Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): David Rain Ways that the "population" data layer have been traditionally conceived--as a single unit with unitary characteristics--have been challenged recently with the explosion of GIS applications requiring georeferenced demographic data at a subnational scale. These applications include election planning, humanitarian response, health interventions, economic development, government accountability, and many others. This presentation will review some recently emerging requirements for better information on both population characteristics and poverty assessments at local scales of analysis. After providing a recap of some well understood barriers to providing better data, it will spell out some steps that GIS practitioners and others can take to make better data available to all.
