Spatial Analysis of Food Poverty in Ecuador Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Andrew Farrow This paper examines the spatial structure of food consumption in Ecuador between 1990 and 2001. In this period Ecuador suffered the strongest El Niņo phenomenon in living memory, a "modernization" of state involvement in agriculture and planning, and a severe economic crisis resulting in the adoption of the dollar as Ecuador's currency. We show that Ecuadorian food consumption per person is spatially dependent, and we use spatial analysis to test hypotheses of the causes of absolute levels of food consumption and changes in food consumption in the 1990'. We study in detail the role of natural events in food poverty and how spatially variant access to market affects food consumption.
