Spatial Variation of Rural Poverty in Bangladesh
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs

A project involving several Bangladesh government agencies was implemented to identify and map, at rural sub-district (upazila) level, where the most disadvantaged among the rural populations in Bangladesh are concentrated, and to analyze factors contributing to the spatial concentration of rural poverty. We used the small area estimation technique to estimate household income for almost one million Census households, with which we computed poverty indices at upazila level. Next, the poverty indices were regressed, at upazila level, against possible explanatory factors representing other aspects of human well-being and deprivation, including people's assets (human, financial and physical capital); their opportunities (natural resources endowment, accessibility, migration); and their vulnerabilities or susceptibilities to environmental stresses. Last, the use of geographically weighted regression technique to further analyze the relationships between the poverty indices and the determinant factors reveal significant spatial differentiation of these relationships.
