ModelBuilder Applications for Regional Environmental Planning and Resource Management.
Track: Modeling
Author(s): Joerg Schaller

During the testing of the beta version of ArcGIS, the ModelBuilder was found to be an extremely useful software to support geoprocessing procedures applied to very large geodatabases for environmental planning and assessment as well as for decision support on a regional planning level.

This new technology allows not only to speed up evaluation procedures, it also helps to create a better understanding and better documentation of complex GIS processing procedures. The results are automatically documented and the workflow of the evaluation as well as the applied assessment and modeling methods. A really big advantage is the possibility to make on the fly changes in the workflow, the processing rules or in the GIS model parameter definitions.

The updated new model run depicts quickly the results of the changes in the related thematical map.

The pilot ModelBuilder applications have been developed for two large regional planning projects in Bavaria. The Landscape development project in the region of Munich and the regional planning expertise for wind power plant siting in the region Danube - Iller river. Both projects are based on large geodatabases in the scale 1 : 25 000 , involving digital terrain models, actual land use, all data on abiotic and biotic resources as well as statistical data on economy, population etc. related to community boundaries. The pilot applications showed that the ModelBuilder software is able to handle very large and complex Geodatabases and also allows the integration of external expert models such as for example an economic wind power site evaluation model.

The applications had been carried out based on real project data to deliver results for political decisions. The presentation to the involved public had been very successful, as the ModelBuilder workflow diagrams had been exellent for easy explanations of the working and assessment steps which had been carried out. One can say the Modelbuilder is also a very important technology to raise the acceptance of planning results.
