Status of Poverty-Mapping Efforts by Loma Linda University and the University of Redlands in Tanzania, Malawi, and Honduras
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Robert Ford, Gideon Mazinga, Adrian Fitzgerald

Loma Linda University (LLU) has a new doctoral program in social policy and social research which includes a track focused on sustainable development (see http://www.llu.edu/llu/grad/socialwork/phdmain.html). Poverty mapping is seen as a critical tool for students to learn and apply; LLU is currently working on three poverty mapping projects:

a) In collaboration with the MS-GIS program at the University of Redlands (U of R), the University of Rhode Island (URI), and the Tanzania Coastal Management Partnership (TCMP) via efforts by Adrian Fitzgerald (U of R) is helping design and implement an ArcIMS that will host spatial datasets focused on poverty and environment which were first presented in 2002 at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The IMS will be a fully OGC-interface compliant and builds on efforts first launched under the GISD (Geographic Information for Sustainable Development) initiative.

b) Gideon Mazinga is starting a dissertation project that will assess the spatial dimensions of "social capital" and its linkages to HIV/AIDS, poverty, and livelihoods in a sub-region of Malawi. He will build on efforts by others such as Todd Benson of IFPRI.

c) Robert E. Ford (Professor of Social Policy at LLU/SST) is supervising both projects above and has begun his own poverty mapping on the North Coast of Honduras. He just returned from a field trip July 12, 2004 and is preparing for expanded efforts there over the next few years.

Your suggestions on methods, applications, and goals are much appreciated and we would welcome collaboration in these efforts
